Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgery, sometimes known as otorhinolaryngology, is a sector of medicine that may carry serious repercussions in the rare occurrence that medical negligence occurs.
This is, in part, because the operations that are performed are in or near the head - a slip of the scalpel can lead to a damaged facial nerve or to the nerve that connects to the vocal chords, either of which could seriously impede the use of expressive muscles.
The introduction of endoscopic procedures allowed a new kind of clinical negligence claim to appear, in which damage has been done by the flexible camera or tools used to perform the keyhole surgery. These can involve damage to the bones around the eyes or within the sinuses. Another potential complication is the leakage of brain fluid which, if not stemmed, can lead to the loss of smell (anosmia) or, in the worst case, meningitis.
If a person has anatomical irregularities that would not have been previously detected, however, such complications may not be considered negligent.
A further issue that must be considered is that the ENT department deals with common conditions, meaning that the workload is high and that it is often the case that relatively inexperienced doctors may be working on a patient.
While there are risks in ENT work, as in any area of medicine, it should be remembered that the vast majority of medical treatment is not substandard, and ENT embraces procedures that have a 1% risk figure in 90% of cases, so fears of clinical negligence should not dissuade people from following reputable medical advice.
