According to the HSE, an estimated 2.5 million working days were lost in the manufacturing industry between 2008/09 due to workplace injury and work-related ill health. A lot of factory accidents involve contact with moving machinery, being hit by a falling or moving object and contact with harmful substances.
A 36-year-old digger operator from Lithuania was killed in March 2010 after he was fatally injured at a Dumfries factory which specialises in the processing of animal by-products. The worker was operating a digger when he was killed in the work accident.
Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary informed the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) of the accident and an investigation into the incident was held.
Full details of the HSE report were not immediately released following the accident so it was unknown at the time whether the fatal work accident was due to operator error or due to a mechanical fault with the machinery.
If the HSE found the factory accident to be caused by mechanical error with the machinery or believed the deceased employee to have received insufficient training on how to work the machinery, the company could be found liable for the worker's death.
Employers have a duty to ensure the safety of their employees while they are at work. This includes providing the relevant safety clothing and equipment to protect against injury, and also the necessary safety training to ensure that any equipment is used correctly and in a safe manner.
If you have been injured in a work accident, you could be entitled to make a compensation claim for your work place injury.
