Work related accidents, youclaim.co.uk

Even witches may worry about accident at work risks

While most accident at work cases refer to accidents in what might be called 'normal' jobs, this is likely to be because normal jobs are held by more people than unusual ones, not that unusual jobs are implicitly safer. It is, therefore, still necessary for the employers of people with unusual jobs to go through the same process of ensuring that their workers do not face unnecessary risk of personal injury.

One unusual job advertised in 2009 was for a vacancy in Wookey Hole Caves, a Somerset tourist attraction, where the operators required a witch to help recreate a sense of the Dark Ages for its visitors. There cannot be many directly comparable jobs in the UK economy to help the operators set out the risk assessment, but it is clear that one must be made to help prevent foreseeable work injury and any related compensation claims.

As described by the site's general manager, the role is to "live in the cave, be a witch, and do the things witches do". The risks presented by the role are likely to include those of the site - wet rocky floors, low ceilings, sometimes difficult lighting conditions - and, as potions and cauldrons are mentioned, these are likely to be present risks relating to chemicals and to physical burns.

It is unlikely that the risk of petrification is to be listed, despite the fate of the legendary witch who was believed to have been turned to stone by the Bishop of Glastonbury.

Evidence, if needed, that the Dark Age role must still meet modern law can be found in the fact that the job advert will accept male applicants, in compliance with sex discrimination rules.
