CT scans may be recommended for asbestos cancer diagnoses

A Finnish study into the use of CT scans in the diagnosis of asbestos cancer was completed in 2006. It showed that these scans were better than plain radiography for detecting cancer in patients' lungs.

A CT scan involves computed tomography, which is a method of taking images of 'slices' of a patient using a scanner that circles the body, and using a computer to assemble these 'slices'. (The first half of the word comes from a Greek root meaning 'slice'.)

The Finnish study observed 633 workers with asbestos exposure, and a further 180 current and ex-smokers. In these people, five cancers were found through CT scanning, only one of which was identified under plain scanning.

However, more incidental findings were recognised by CT scanning - 343 incidental findings were spotted, of which only 46 required further examination. The study described this as a "major concern", but recommended that CT scans should be considered for smokers and non-smokers who had been exposed to asbestos.
