Contact dermatitis claim for work-related skin irritation
05/08/2011

In work environments which could expose staff to allergens or irritants, employers should provide personal protective equipment to their employees to avoid work injury and contact dermatitis claims.

Contact dermatitis is a type of eczema and can cause red, itchy and scaly skin, which can also lead to burning and stinging sensations for the sufferer.

There are two types of dermatitis, these are allergic contact and irritant contact.

An allergic contact reaction will occur when the skin is exposed to a substance which makes the body's immune respond by becoming inflamed or dry.

Irritant contact reactions are caused by an irritant substance which causes physical damage to the person's skin. According to the NHS this type of skin problem is more common than allergic reactions, with eight out of ten cases of contact dermatitis being caused by an irritant.

Substances which commonly cause human skin irritation are detergents, petrol, oils, dust, and certain plants.

People who suffer from allergic contact dermatitis often react when their skin has been exposed to Nickel, which occurs in many different metals, cobalt, some cosmetics, additives in leather, preservatives in various beauty products, and also some plants such as daffodils and tulips.

These are some of the most common substances known to cause contact dermatitis in some individuals, however there are many other materials which can cause people skin irritation.

For this reason, an employer in charge of workers who come into contact with any known allergens or irritants should provide their staff with the correct personal protective equipment.

If the employer is unaware of the potential for skin problems developing from the items that staff are handling and a worker begins to suffer the effects of contact dermatitis, then the employer should reassess the health and safety of the working environment and provide staff with protective wear.

This should help reduce the risk of exasperating or creating any dermatitis problems amongst employees and also avoid the need for any legal action in the form of a work injury compensation claim from being made.
