One of the greatest and most persistent tunnel construction accident risks comes from airborne respirable crystalline silica (RCS).
The disease occurs when silica, in the form of an incredibly fine dust, becomes lodged deep in the tissues of the lung.
Silica is a mineral frequently found in rocks such as flint, sandstone, granite and slate; it is also found in certain metallic and coal ores.
RCS-related illness is a lung disease that can lead to serious respiratory problems, disability and even death. As silica is toxic, it can provoke an intense inflammatory response, resulting in permanent thickening and scarring of the lung tissue. Those affected can develop serious breathing problems associated with the resultant condition: fibrosis.
RCS hazards are an inherent danger of tunnelling work and tunnel construction accidents involving tunnel boring machines, muck handlers, rock bolters, black hole drills and cutter booms are all likely to result in a heightened silica risk.
The delay between exposure and onset of symptoms is usually lengthy, typically between 15 and 20 years; this is typical of the disease known as chronic silicosis.
However, there are also two other types of silicosis: accelerated, which will usually occur up to 15 years following exposure and has a faster pathology, and: acute, which develops after very high exposure and is very rapid in the onset, accumulation and severity of symptoms.
Unfortunately, although there are steroid treatments available to sufferers of RCS illness and antibiotics can treat secondary infections, there is no cure for the illness.
As such those affected may be entitled to make no win, no fee claims for industrial disease compensation for RCS.
