Music tour construction site accident claims two workers' lives

Often, a construction site accident will have involved a building site, but in July 2009 the erection of a roof over a football stadium that was to stage a leg of the Sticky and Sweet tour by pop star Madonna caused the death of two people and injuries to many other construction workers at the site after its catastrophic collapse.

Workers had been putting a stage into place in the 60,000 seater Vélodrome football ground in Marseilles, France when cranes that were winching the roof into place became unbalanced, causing one to topple 50 feet down to where many technicians were working on the stage below.

A 53-year-old French worker at the site was killed instantly and another British man died later in a nearby hospital as a result of his injuries. Many other workers were injured, at least four seriously, with a range of fractures and broken bones.

The roof was described as Meccano-like and emergency workers who went to the scene of the collapsed construction said it resembled a battlefield where victims were scattered under the wreckage.

French authorities quickly launched a manslaughter investigation after the work-related deaths and safety investigators were set to interview witnesses to the accident and directors of the firm responsible for the construction. Following a similar stage collapse on the Madonna tour in November 2008, serious questions were being asked over the safety procedures utilised by the firm.
