Preventing construction site accidents involving children

Most adults would recognise the threat of construction site accidents and know to avoid the dangers inherent from building sites and houses under refurbishment, but young children are often fascinated by diggers and construction machinery and may be tempted to roam onto a badly protected construction site, putting themselves in great danger as a result.

Under Health and Safety Executive (HSE) regulations site managers and business operators have a legal responsibility to secure workplaces and construction sites and can be prosecuted if they fail to do so and the HSE have produced a free, downloadable leaflet aimed at educating children of the dangers they might face on a badly secured building site.

The leaflet, entitled "Stay Safe – Building Site Safety" introduces a character called Digga who takes children on a journey through a construction site and highlights the many dangers that can be found therein.

Basic dangers of the construction site
There is also a downloadable poster that draws attention not only to the dangers of playing in the workplace, but also to some of the fundamental issues that need to be addressed by the management team of the site:

  • Fences around construction sites should be locked and secure around the entirety of the perimeter to prevent unauthorised entry;
  • Pits and holes, including manholes, must be covered safely so as to prevent people falling into them;

  • Piles of bricks, pipes and other building material should never be stacked too high or they will pose a threat of tumbling over and crushing nearby persons.

  • Vehicles should make a warning sound when reversing to alert people, especially children, who may not be visible to the driver;

  • Temporary roadworks should have adequate barriers to alert children and passers by to the nearby dangers; and,

  • Building site warning signs should be highly visible to alert people and to warn them of the dangers of trespassing on the site.
