Construction workface' personal injury claims
Many outside of the construction industry are aware that it is one of the UK's most work accident prone job sectors. What they may not be aware of is that claims for personal injury compensation resulting from construction accidents arise from a variety of surprising causes.
Perhaps the most surprising cause of personal injury compensation claims is the hazard of workers simply getting to the workface'.
Two separate studies (the Bomel Ltd study in association with the HSE and a Loughborough University study) have clearly demonstrated that getting to the workface is the single biggest cause of construction accidents. Inevitably, this means that the single greatest cause of construction accident personal injury compensation claims is very probably the same hazard.
What personal injury compensation claim hazards are associated with moving to and from the workface'?
The two studies mentioned earlier both suggest the following hazards associated with moving to and from the workface to be high sources of personal injury compensation claims in the construction industry.
- Bad supervision, poor interaction, lack of skills and limited client involvement.
- Workers who frequently move around the construction site and workers who often come in and out of the workface.
- Bad manual handling training (frequently associated with musculoskeletal disorder injuries).
- Poor design of the construction accident scene.
- Poor investigation of previous construction accidents including blindness to important issues such as health and safety management.
HSE spokesperson, Trevor Allan explains the research, "This research was commissioned to improve our knowledge of the underlying causes of accidents in construction. The findings of both of these research projects identify the areas of greatest risk and point towards what some of the underlying causes could be. Construction workers are almost three times more likely to suffer a fatal or major injury than workers in other sectors. Although almost 30 per cent of these accidents involve falls from height, this is almost matched by the number of slips and trips on the same level. Most of those were trips, suggesting that site housekeeping, or lack of it, is a major contributor, an issue that is explained in the recently released HSE leaflet The High 5'.
"Research, such as this, helps both the HSE and industry to identify areas of weakness in health and safety performance. One finding suggests that contractors could improve their own investigation of accidents by focusing on prevention, rather than blame. This research will also help the HSE prioritise its work and adjust its strategies to ensure the best use of resources."
