Oxy-fuel welding accidents

Oxy-fuel welding, using a blend of fuel such as oxy-acetylene, can be a dangerous task even when performed in devoted workshops. The risks of a work accident only increase when the procedure must be carried out on a construction site.

The Welding Institute (or TWI) recommends that all fuel cylinders are kept securely upright while in use, which can be more difficult onsite when large beams are to be welded in awkward places. As construction can create large amounts of dirt and dust, it is perhaps even more difficult to follow the recommendation to keep all joints on both the cylinders and the regulators clean.

Despite difficulties, it is equally important to follow these guidelines, as failure to do so may result in the welder being involved in a work accident. The responsibility is not entirely the welder's; employers also have a responsibility to ensure that appropriate training has been given and all equipment is fit for use.

Welding injuries that may occur can also be caused by burns from the torch or explosions from leaking cylinders, among others. These can also lead to secondary problems, such as a fall if the accident occurred at height. It is also possible to breathe in particles or gases from the flux being used, which can lead to industrial diseases. Read more about manganism and welding rod fumes.

Unlike a fixed welding station, construction site welding may occur anywhere. Workers other than the welder should be made aware that welding is in progress, as they may need to take precautions such as protective eyewear.
