All the health and safety training in the world cannot save a worker from personal injury if a ladder accident occurs as a result of the equipment slipping. The existence of non-slip feet that can be attached to the base of ladders is proof that people are aware of the problem and of ways to prevent ladders from slipping away from the wall.
Most ladder manufacturers install non-slip feet as a matter of course on their products; others may require them to be added. Even on those where feet have been pre-installed, employers who are serious about avoiding a work accident will ensure that the feet have been examined regularly and replaced if necessary. Failure to do so may be a breach of health and safety legislation and may leave the employer open to a costly compensation claim.
These feet are often constructed of textured rubber, increasing the surface area and friction between the legs of the ladder and the surface on which it stands. Articulated feet ensure that a flat 'sole' can be entirely in contact with the floor surface, assuming it is flat; some feet are provided with studs, like football boots, to help deal with uneven surfaces. On a soft and uneven surface, ladder spikes may be a better choice.
Another alternative to feet is the ladder mat; rather than improving the grip of the feet, this improves the surface's friction with a ladder's existing ends. With a large rubber surface on both sides, and a firm ridge to prevent horizontal movement, these produce a grip firm enough that one Bristol company that sells the mats claims that they can act as a safe alternative to the second person 'footing' the ladder.
How far that claim is trusted is a matter for an individual employer's risk assessment, of course, but a firm that uses ladders must register that the potential for them to slip is a risk that must be assessed and countered, whether with feet, mats or some other solution, if a personal injury claim is to be avoided.
