In December 2009, a particular make of industrial vehicle hit the headlines as papers and online bulletins resounded with the news of terrible JCB accidents and, conversely, JCBs being used as rescue vehicles attempting to save lives.
The most dramatic story revolved around an organic farm in the Cotswolds where an employee had died some years before after falling out of the forward bucket of a JCB and then being crushed by the telescopic handler's wheels.
At the Health and Safety Executive prosecution hearing in Gloucester Crown Court the firm was fined £65,000 and ordered to pay £25,000 in costs after the HSE's investigation revealed breaches in the Health and Safety at Work Act.
Another JCB accident in the news involved a mini-digger being used by an experienced park keeper, to dredge a lake. As the JCB vehicle went down ramps into the lake it toppled over, trapping the worker in the partially drained lake. Although a rescue was swiftly carried out by emergency services, the park keeper's foot had been badly crushed and he required at least two operations following the work accident injury.
In Scotland, in December 2009, an 18-year-old motorcyclist died following a collision with a JCB on a B road in Aberdeenshire.
A police spokesperson said, "I am appealing for any witnesses who may have seen either the motorcyclist or the tractor on the B9001 prior to the collision.
"Our thoughts are with the family of this young man at this very difficult and tragic time. Enquiries are still at a very early stage to determine the cause of the collision."
And in Hertfordshire, two workers used their JCB to drag a car out of freezing water after the driver skidded on black ice, losing control and finally crashing into the River Stort.
The father and son workers used their digger's bucket to reach the upturned car, plucking the 17-year-old female driver out of the icy water,. However, they were unable to reach the passenger, also 17.
Another bystander swam to the car but failed to open the doors. The JCB operatives then used the vehicle to pull the car out of the river, whereby the passenger was freed and taken to hospital. Although revived by medics, she later died as a result of injuries and being in the water for over 20 minutes.
