The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) run a number of campaigns aimed at preventing construction accidents and industrial disease within the building industry. HSE inspectors also carry out on-the-spot inspections of workplaces and construction sites in a bid to reinforce the message of the campaigns and check that health and safety regulations are being upheld.
The campaigns are primarily focused on bringing information regarding inherent risks of the construction industry to those involved in it. For workers, the HSE aims to highlight some of the risks and dangers that they face and their rights to demand training and safe working conditions. For employers, the campaigns are intended to raise awareness of responsibilities and how they may best fulfil all the HSE regulations in relation to their type of work.
In March 2009, HSE inspectors in Cambridge targeted sites where refurbishment, repair and maintenance projects were underway as part of the Shattered Lives and Hidden Killer campaigns, in a bid to halt the number of workers injured or killed in falls from height accidents and asbestos-related diseases.
On finding dangerous practices at seven sites, prohibition notices were served, thus halting work until changes were made to enable safe conditions for employees and contractors.
Peter Galsworthy, HSE principal inspector for construction in Cambridgeshire, said, "Five sites were found to have serious health and safety issues - such risk to the workforce is unacceptable.
"As stated before our last inspection initiative, while workers in the refurbishment sector continue to be injured and killed, HSE will continue to target those contractors who flout health and safety law and come down hard on them where necessary."
