When a contract worker enters a construction site the employer or site management team has a duty to asses the risks for that worker. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have compiled an example risk assessment sheet that identifies the building site accident hazards specifically for those employing contract bricklayers. The guide can be found at the HSE website, and businesses are encouraged to identify these and any other risks specific to their particular construction site.
Particular hazards identified for bricklayers on a building site are:
An effective risk assessment should identify who might be harmed and how for each hazard, with particular reference to the contractor that the assessment sheet is designed for.
The employer should identify what measures are already in place at the site and then identify what further action is necessary to minimise each risk.
A responsible employee on the site, such as the site foreman, should be identified to carry out any actions required; a date should be set for completion of that action and when the action has been completed the date of completion should also be entered on the risk assessment sheet. Finally a date should be set for the risk assessment to be reviewed.
The above assessment of specific hazards is a guide and each building site should be individually assessed for specific risks. Certain site specific criteria should be taken into consideration such as weather conditions, time of year etc. Risk assessment should be individually tailored to each site for each different contractor.
