Pollution, the London 2012 Olympics and construction site accidents
While it might not fall within the typical definition of a construction site accident, pollution stemming from vehicles used on building sites can lead to personal injury. And, of course, this impact is limited not just to site workers but also to the wider public as a whole.
Perhaps that's why this unusual construction site "accident" risk resulted in concerned cross-party MPs signing an Early Day Motion urging for site equipment, particularly that involved in building work for the 2012 London Olympics, to be fitted with pollution-limiting technology in 2008.
It is larger machinery that is the cause for the most concern. The MPs said that pollution-limiting devices have the ability to reduce emissions by as much as 85%, helping to reduce the incidence of respiratory conditions such as occupational asthma.
Danny Stevens, from the Environmental Industries Association, supported the MPs Early Day Motion. He commented, "The London Olympics has pledged to be the most environmental yet - that must include ensuring this huge construction project does not contribute to poor air quality. "Poor air quality is a killer. It is about time that the Olympic Delivery Authority acted on its commitment to implement the London Best Practice, including protecting the public from poor air quality by ensuring that suitable pollution control technology is fitted to the equipment used on site. "Cars, buses, lorries and other heavy-duty road vehicles have long been subject to strict emission controls, yet the equipment used on construction sites remains unregulated and free to pollute."
It is believed that there is a link between both the rate and acuteness of asthma and air pollution, particularly among children. And, although more work needs to be done on understanding the link, pollution particles such as particulates - fine dust and soot particles, also known as PM -carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), benzene and hydrocarbons (HCs) are thought to responsible for around 10,000 premature deaths in the UK each year.
If a person develops illness because of high levels of exposure in the workplace, his or her employer make be considered liable for any compensation claim made.
