Construction site accidents and the dangers of a wall collapse

Construction sites are full of all kinds of hazards from the dangers associated with heavy machinery to unstable foundations and fixtures. A collapsing wall is a construction worker's worst nightmare as it can happen suddenly and without warning leading to serious injury and even death. In 2009, there were several incidents across the world where multiple workers were killed or injured as a result of collapsed walls during building work.

In one such incident a worker was killed when a wall fell at a building site in North Raleigh, America. The accident occurred after the workers had been taking down a concrete wall that separated the original wall from the addition. Tragically the concrete wall collapsed and the worker died at the scene.

This wall collapse was the second to occur in a week in America after a following collapse led to the injury of a worker at a site in Wake Forest, America. Although the worker was not seriously harmed, the American Department of Labour investigated both incidents to determine if new safety protocols needed to be established to prevent against these types of construction accidents.

Although rare in the UK thanks to stringent construction site safety regulations, the collapse of a wall during construction can be disastrous. The collapse of a house in Glasgow in August 2007 demonstrates this after residents and construction workers were nearly killed. Building work to a neighbouring house weakened the structure of the residential building causing part of it to break off and collapse. Thankfully, fire crews had evacuated the building just half an hour before as concerning cracks appeared on the walls.

Although no one was hurt in this incident, without the prompt actions of the emergency services, it could have been a different story. Construction companies have a duty to adhere to the strict safety measures enforced by the HSE to ensure the safety of both the public and their workers.

Due to the nature of the job, working as a construction worker is inherently dangerous. However, with the right training and protective clothing, these risks can be minimised.
