Advice to avoid a bridge construction site accident

Construction site work can be laborious, but also rewarding once the project is finished and workers can see what they've achieved. However, if employers don't ensure that the right safety regulations are enforced, workers could become involved in a construction site accident.

In 2010 a 52-year-old workman fell to his death when he was on a ladder conducting maintenance work on a bridge. Nearly one hundred workers have died as a result of construction work on the same bridge.

Bridges are designed to allow roads and railways to cross over water, valleys, roads and other obstacles. However, the construction work can be very dangerous, especially if the correct safety precautions are not in place.

If an employee is required to work at height they should be provided with a well-maintained safety harness to prevent them from falling. They should also be given high visibility clothing to ensure that other workers, who may be using machinery nearby, can clearly see them.

However hard an employer might try to avoid hazards, it is difficult to predict when a heavy object might fall or a worker might trip. Thus, employees should always wear hard hats, metal capped boots and other protective garments to stave off an industrial injury such as a head injury.

Under the circumstance of an employee needing to take medication which causes drowsiness, the employer should be notified immediately so that they can ensure that the worker is allocated an appropriate job.

If an employee feels at risk in the work they are doing and suspects that they have not been given the relevant training or protective gear, they should not hesitate to raise any concerns with their employer.

Safety regulations should always be followed properly or bridge construction work could lead to a devastating and potentially fatal accident.
