The risks of developing dermatitis on a construction site

Construction workers undertake physically demanding work and if they are not given the right equipment or training, they can be at risk of sustaining a construction injury.

Hazardous substances which are used for construction purposes can often lead to workers developing dermatitis.

Dermatitis generally affects the forearms and hands, but can also appear on the face, neck, chest and legs. The condition is an inflammation of the skin which can be caused from contact with a variety of materials.

Symptoms can include redness, dryness, itching, swelling, blistering and flaking and the condition can be very painful for the sufferer.

If dermatitis has been caused by work it is likely to worsen if the sufferer remains employed in the same role. It can be caused by a variety of different substances, including wet cement, acrylic sealants, solvents, petrol and diesel, and degreasers, descalers and detergents.

By law, an employer must establish and eliminate or reduce exposure to the hazardous materials which cause dermatitis to their workforce.

Although all construction workers are at risk of developing dermatitis, bricklayers, roofers, road-workers and painters are at greater risk because they are more likely to come into contact with harmful substances.

Special gloves designed to protect against hazardous materials can often provide protection from dermatitis, but they must be taken on and off carefully to avoid transferring any contaminants to the insides of the gloves and an employer should not presume that gloves are a simple solution to the problem.

It may be more effective to discuss and explain the risks of dermatitis to employees and let them know what they should be looking out for and how to protect themselves.

Proper washing facilities with hot and cold running water and soap should be maintained along with a way of drying wet hands. Creams should also be provided for use before and after work to help soothe skin which may have been exposed to harsh substances.

Although strict health and safety regulations are imperative on construction sites, employers sometimes neglect to enforce or update them and consequently endanger their workforces' safety.

Unfortunately, as a result, employees often become involved in a construction site accident through no fault of their own.
