There are few working environments as hazardous as a construction site, making strict attention to the finer details of health and safety a vital aspect of professional life all who work in the industry. Unfortunately, construction accidents do happen, and it has been shown that younger workers have a higher statistical chance of being involved one than their more senior co-workers.
Two obvious reasons for this are their relative inexperience and vulnerability to exploitation. Another, however, could be the fact that younger workers have higher levels of testosterone in their bodies, something that studies have time and again shown to be a significant contributor to a person's propensity to take risks.
Testosterone is the male hormone responsible for sperm production, growth of the reproductive organs, as well as secondary male sexual characteristics such as body hair growth and muscle formation. While testosterone levels tend to peak in the males during their late teens and early twenties, for some people high testosterone production will continue into later life.
But it is its strong and proven link with risk-taking that makes high levels of testosterone among construction workers a construction accident danger. While this does not explain why an over three-day work injury is suffered by a young worker in Britain every 12 minutes, it does help provide a useful picture of the kinds of protections and education employers have a responsibility to provide their young workers with.
It is not the risk-taking itself that the younger worker will seek, but, rather, the sensations and experiences that together form risk-taking behaviour. On one hand, it may be the thrill of speed on the road, or the heightened sensations of alcohol consumption in the pub; on the other, it might be that carelessness about height or the use of personal protective equipment provide similar thrills on a construction site. This makes the teaching obligations employers owe their young staff even more important.
It is important, then, to stress that the vast majority of construction site injuries and fatalities to younger workers are not caused by immaturity or recklessness on the part of the younger worker, but by negligent failures on the part of the employer.
