Construction accidents and assessing injury prevention measures
A recent report into the effectiveness of measures designed to curb construction accidents is called Interventions for Preventing Injuries in the Construction Industry.
Interventions for Preventing Injuries in the Construction Industry, while by no means an authoritative study - it considered only five research papers in reaching its findings - does raise some interesting questions of the current health and safety approach within the construction industry.
Controversially, the study found that there is "no evidence" that regulations introduced to reduce rates of serious and fatal construction accidents are effective.
Interestingly, however, the study's authors did find "limited evidence" that safety drives and the promotion of drug-free workplaces within construction are useful tools in lowering the number of non-fatal construction injuries.
Although it is quite speculative, this second finding may suggest that promoting a broad culture of health and safety may be the best weapon health and safety experts have for reducing injury rates in the most dangerous of all the major industries.
And, ultimately, the responsibility of promoting a good safety culture lies with management and employers.
Health and Safety Executive Chair, Judith Hackitt comments, "Evidence shows that where employers and employees work closely together to agree the agenda and set targets to tackle real issues, they have made significant improvements. We want this to continue and we also want to see employers taking more ownership and leadership to embed health and safety in their organisational culture and boardrooms."
