Avoiding construction accidents through standardised signage

Various statutory and regulatory instruments work to reduce the construction accident risk, providing employers with obligations that, if not met, may give grounds to injured workers receiving payouts personal injury.

One important and sometimes overlooked regulation is the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996.

The regulations help enforce the EC Safety Signs Directive (92/58/EEC) and are of particular importance to the construction industry because, quite simply, signs are the most effective onsite means of communicating health and safety messages.

The regulations encourage European Union-wide standardisation of safety signs so that, theoretically, all signs within member states have the same meaning. Considering the increasingly mobile nature of construction workforces across the EU, this uniformity is seen as essential in preventing avoidable construction accidents.

Various "sign types" are provided for by the regulations, all falling within a four colour categorisation system: red, yellow or amber, blue and green.

Practically all signs are covered, including illuminated signs, fire safety signs, signs that relate to pipework, road traffic signs, safety helmet requirement signs and those that relate to toxic or hazardous substances.

Claim 100 percent construction accident compensation
Construction is among the most hazardous industries in the UK, with the industry accounting for a disproportionate number of workplace injuries.

Against this background of risk and injury, employers and site managers have strong obligations to ensure the safety of workers. These obligations are enforceable by the Health and Safety Commission and fines may be issued in cases where there have been breaches of statutory obligations.

In addition, the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work strengthens rights of workers across all EU member states.

Whether your injury was a result of faulty equipment, a failure to provide correct signage or some other form of health and safety breach, it may be possible to claim 100 percent compensation for medical expenses, lost earnings and your pain and suffering.
