2009 brought some good news for the UK construction accident outlook, with a Health and Safety Executive Report revealing that there had been an improvement in the number of building sites found to comply with regulations during routine spot checks; however, this good news was tempered by the fact that one five sites was still to be found wanting with "serious risks".
The report detailed a routine inspection of 1,759 refurbishment sites during March. With four in five sites passing inspection compared to only two in three during 2008, construction accident experts have speculated that the report might indicate an improvement in the industry's approach to health and safety.
However, HSE construction inspector Philip White said that he was "disappointed" with the basic failures on around 500 sites. Of these 500, 348 were found to have "sufficient serious risks" to warrant the issue of enforcement notices.
White commented, "This inspection initiative was well publicised and for our inspectors to still find this level of disregard for basic health and safety standards on refurbishment sites is disappointing.
"While any improvement has to be welcomed, our inspectors still found practices so far below the acceptable standard that they felt it necessary to take enforcement action on one in five sites. This is still very worrying."
Pertinently, the report was released only a matter of hours after several media outlets carried news of a work injury compensation claim being mounted by a construction worker who suffered spinal injury during building work on the M20.
