When compressed gas features in a construction injury

Some tasks on a building site would be impractical without the use of compressed gas, with oxy-acetylene welding being perhaps the best known. If the canisters in which the gas is kept are not appropriately handled, a construction injury (and perhaps a related compensation claim) is a potential result.

The obvious danger that springs to mind is the danger of explosions. This is not to be downplayed; a flammable gas in an area where sparks are likely is, of course, a danger, and any risk assessment performed on a building site where such a gas is in use is more than likely to take note of this.

The dangers in an explosion are of burns occurring to the workers on the building site accidents such as falling from a structure on which an explosion occurs, and physical damage from any objects turned into missiles by an exploding canister. Nails, screws and washers are only a few of the small, hard objects involved in construction that can become deadly missiles with explosive force behind them.

But there are other risks involved with these gases. Flammable vapour that does not ignite, if it has a significantly different density from air, can gather in roof cavities (if lighter than air) or excavated areas (if heavier), and explode later. Non-flammable ones may still be able to asphyxiate or poison a worker, leading to personal injury or even death.

And it is not only the contents of the heavy metal bottles that are a danger; the bottles themselves can cause serious injury should they fall on an unsuspecting employee.

All of these risks are predictable, and should feature in both the risk assessments undertaken by a construction company and in training given to employees to ensure the work injury avoidance procedures recommended in that assessment are met.
