There are many dangerous items of machinery and tools used in construction which could result in a building site accident, however the weather may also have a part to play in work-related personal injury cases.
Different types of weather can create varying problems for employees on a building site and could end in them having to make a compensation claim for their pain, suffering and loss of earnings if a work-related accident was caused by another party's negligence.
Sun
Although it is a worker's own responsibility to make sure that they put enough sun cream on, so as not to suffer sunburn, the site manager or firm in charge of overseeing the construction should provide employees with a shaded area in which to sit or stand during breaks.
Without a shaded place to cool down an individual may suffer sun stoke, and this could be extremely detrimental. The worker's blood pressure could fall and they may faint, which might be especially dangerous if they are high up on scaffolding, a ladder, or standing near hard objects such as bricks.
Another protection against sun stroke is the consumption of water. This will also reduce the risk of workers becoming dehydrated. Employers should make sure that those under their employment are provided with a source of water somewhere on the site or nearby. Employees may bring bottles of water with them but a refilling station should be available.
Rain
There is little chance of a worker suffering from sun stroke in wet weather, but wet ground is likely to increase the chances of an individual suffering a work injury by slipping over.
The individuals in charge of the site should carefully assess the risks of an accident occurring after rain has rendered the ground unstable. Some areas of a site may be covered in plastic sheeting to protect parts of the construction, such as building foundations, but other areas could be hazardous.
When ground is too slippery to work on safely, employers should consider using ground protection mats or planks to reduce the risk of a slip accident occurring.
