In April 2010, builders downed their tools on International Workers Memorial Day to commemorate two colleagues killed in building site accidents in 2008 and 2009.
As one of the most accident-prone industries, unfortunately serious work accidents are common for builders and so the day was also intended to highlight the importance of safety on construction sites.
The event, which was held in east London, was attended by around 100 building workers who downed their tools to remember those who died at building sites.
Located at Westfield, near the Olympic Stadium, the Memorial Day was aimed at highlighting the importance of health and safety on International Workers Memorial Day which is held on April 28th each year.
The memorial was organised by the Construction Safety Campaign and the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians (UCATT). It was aimed particularly at workers employed on the various projects started for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
A UCATT spokesperson said, "There are lessons to be learnt and it is important we learn these lessons to make our industry a safe industry for workers to work in."
At the time of writing there had been no construction site accident deaths linked with the London Olympics and officials hoped that by raising the importance of construction safety, it wouldl stay that way.
If you or a loved one has been involved in a construction site accident for which someone else was to blame, you could be eligible to make a compensation claim.
