Building site accident injury figures need inspection

2010 brought good news for the construction industry on two fronts: not only were fatal incidents down but there were also significant falls in non-fatal and major building site accident injuries.

The statistics, released by the Health and Safety Executive under the terms of the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995 (RIDDOR), were welcomed by both industry figures and no win, no fee workplace solicitors, not least because they detailed falling injury rates for the second consecutive year.

Indeed, an early analysis of the figures indicated that building site accident injuries were at their lowest level ever in Britain.

However, the statistics were not greeted with unanimous enthusiasm; some critics argued that, as there had been a drop in construction industry productivity, the figures only reflected less worksite activity.

There were also suggestions that the accident drop only served as an indictment of a failure by RIDDOR in its injury reporting mechanisms.

This is an argument that has been supported by researchers at the University of Liverpool. They have found that as few as only 3 in ten of reportable accidents are reported to RIDDOR.

Alan Ritchie the general secretary of union UCATT shared this view. "These figures are welcome, but we need to bear in mind continuing issues such as the under-reporting of accidents in construction," he said.

A spokesperson from accident compensation specialist YouClaim comments, "Although it is encouraging to see a fall in reported accidents, it is worrying to think that so many serious incidents are going unreported.

"Whether this is because of the use of unregistered labour, because of fears about job security, employer pressure or plain laziness, it has the potential to compromise the safety of all workers.

"RIDDOR is there for a reason, and it is up to employers to use it."
