Balcony safety in holiday injury cases

Following several holiday injury accidents in 2008, where holiday makers suffered severe or fatal injury after falling from hotel balconies or walkways while on continental holidays, calls were made for greater balcony safety in holiday hotels.

Holiday makers should be aware that balconies and walkways in hotel accommodation and public buildings abroad may not be subject to the same stringent levels of health and safety regulation as they would expect in the UK. The risk of falls from height may be greater in foreign buildings.

The height and design of balconies may vary greatly from country to country and many hotels will not be legally required to install toughened or safety glass in windows and doors.

Children should never be left unsupervised on a balcony at any time and particular care should be taken with balcony furniture to prevent children from climbing up. Likewise adults should be discouraged from climbing on balcony furniture near a balcony ledge and should refrain from attempting to climb between balconies or passing objects from balcony to balcony.

Particular care should be given on balconies after the consumption of alcohol.

If a balcony or walkway railing or partition appears damaged, let hotel staff know as soon as possible and take photos as evidence. If the balcony poses a serious safety threat, ask to be moved to another room.
