The thought of leaving a surgical implement in a patient following surgery sounds like something that would only happen in a hospital drama. Although not common, compensation for surgical errors following such a medical blunder do arise and often with terrible consequences.
In 2009, a mother-of-four was left with seven inch forceps inside her after a routine operation to remove her gall bladder.
The 39-year-old was in extreme pain after her operation at the Worcestershire Acute Hospital NHS Trust Alexandra Hospital and went back to doctors complaining of severe stomach pain. Believing that she may have picked up a water infection or another gallstone, the woman was sent back to the hospital for an MRI scan.
Due to the magnetic pull that the machine uses, the scan was extremely painful for the woman as the metal of the forceps was attracted to the magnetic resonance of the scanner. It wasn't until the woman underwent an X-Ray that the medical error was discovered as the forceps showed up clearly across the lower half of her body.
Following the incident, the mother made a compensation claim for the medical negligence she suffered and the Worcestershire Acute Hospital NHS Trust made an apology for the error.
Chief executive of the hospital trust, John Rostill, said, "We strive to provide the safest, highest quality care possible for all our patients. In the last 12 months since this extremely unusual incident we have taken a number of steps to further improve standards of safety."
When having an operation, patients put their trust in medical professionals to look after them and provide them with the best medical care. When this is not given or an error is made, this trust can be lost.
If you have suffered a form of medical negligence you deserve to gain compensation for the suffering that you have endured.
