Lyme disease misdiagnosis

It is very difficult to know just how many cases of Lyme disease go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed in the UK each year although experts estimate the misdiagnosis rate could be between fewer than 100 cases a year to as many as several thousand.

What is Lyme disease?
Originally know as tick-borne meningoencephalitis, Lyme disease is caused by a bacterial infection, known as Borrelia burgdorferi which can cause a range of symptoms, ranging from the relatively mild to the chronic and the debilitating.

It is carried in the guts of around 20% of the tick population and can only be transmitted through tick bites.

The risk of infection is increased the longer a tick is left to feed on the blood of a person.

The symptoms of Lyme disease are often preceded by a red and expanding "bulls eye" rash at the site of the bite and can include such things as fatigue, meningitis, tingling sensations, psychiatric problems, nerve palsies, arthritis, neurological damage and fibromyalgia.

Diagnosis
In many cases Lyme disease is diagnosed by observing typical symptoms, such as the "bulls eye" rash and accompanying flu-like symptoms. In some cases a blood test will be ordered to test for antibodies, although this cannot be done until the antibodies have developed, usually around eight weeks after infection.

However, misdiagnosis of Lyme disease does occur and the results of this can be very serious if the patient goes on to develop more chronic Lyme disease symptoms.

In cases where this has happened and negligence can be proven it may be possible for the patient to claim medical negligence compensation.
