One tragic aspect of some compensation for mesothelioma cases is that claimants may only receive settlement very late into the course of the disease or, indeed, posthumously.
Naturally, any scientific advance that improves both prognosis and quality of life is welcomed, but tentatively; the history of mesothelioma disease is littered with false hopes and so-called "breakthroughs".
However, researchers at the Austin Health Centre in Victoria, Australia claim to have discovered a new radiation technique that can significantly improve life expectancy for sufferers of the asbestos-related cancer.
According to Dr Malcolm Feigen, a Radiation Oncologist at the Austin Health Centre, the technique, which involves high doses of radiotherapy, delivers far greater long-term benefits than any currently offered by chemotherapy and may, in some cases, even halt the progress of the lung cancer.
Dr Feigen explains, "Gradually with new technologies and better equipment we've been able to increase our doses and look at the results by doing PET scans before they start the radiotherapy and PET scans after they've finished to see what difference we've made," he said.
"And we've been very impressed that in most cases there's a considerable improvement in the activity of the tumour masses that we've given high doses of radiotherapy. And most patients have got through the course of treatment with no major side effects and some have had long-term benefits."
Most promisingly of all, Dr Feigen says that "with radiotherapy [mesothelioma] doesn't come back in the same area and if we find patients early enough we may be able to stop any further developments of their disease."
Although further studies are needed, only 13 patients participated in the initial research, the results have the potential to give hope to many and, since the radiotherapy treatment has been shown to increase life-expectancy by 100% when compared to chemotherapy, it may result in a larger proportion of compensation for mesothelioma claimants receiving settlement before the onset of mortality.
