Compensation for amputation caused by negligence

Every year in the UK, surgeons successfully perform thousands of operations. However, despite the competence and professionalism of the vast majority, some medical practitioners make unacceptable errors which result in infection and sometimes necessitate amputation – in such cases compensation for amputation may be the right of those affected.

Knee operation gone wrong
In 2009 a man from Birmingham underwent what should have been a routine knee operation in order to repair damage to his patella.

However, shortly after the procedure, the 38-year-old started to develop severe pain. Told that his pain was "nothing to worry about", the man was prescribed powerful painkillers, which he took for several days.

It was only when the man saw a consultant that a haematoma was diagnosed. Despite the best efforts of hospital staff to cleanse the haematoma, necrosis took hold and resulted in the man undergoing an emergency amputation of his leg from above the knee.

In recognition of the man's loss and the hospital's negligence, medical accident lawyers succeeded in securing a six-figure settlement of his behalf.

Mistreated diabetic infection
When in 2007 a man from Southampton went to his GP suffering from an infection in his big toe, little did he realise that a series of errors would lead to him suffering the amputation of his leg from below the knee.

Although a consultant later determined that the toe would need amputating, it was too late and only a week later the man lost his leg to a surgical amputation after doctors realised that the infection was continuing to spread.

Although the man received £200,000 in compensation for the catastrophic errors that led to the amputation, his quality of life and career both suffered a severe impact.
