In 2009 an American drug company released news that mesothelioma patients were amongst those taking part in a clinical trial to test the effectiveness of bavituximab as a treatment option for patients with advanced refractory cancers – those that have not responded to other therapies.
The research team carrying out the trials explained that bavituximab is a unique antibody that enables the body's immune system to target cancer cells. Normal cell membranes are covered with phospholipids whereas tumour blood vessels are hallmarked by the presence of the lipid phosphatidylserine (PS). PS cells are not present on the surface of normal tissue and so can be targeted by anti-cancer treatments.
Bavituximab binds with these PS cells and alerts the body's immune system to attack the tumour by attacking the blood vessels on the surface of the cancer which inhibits tumour growth and proliferation.
One report on the trial suggested that a growing body of evidence has revealed that exposed PS can have an immunosuppressive effect and may diminish the body's normal response to the presence of cancer cells. It is hoped that bavituximab will be proved to boost the body's ability to fight cancers such as malignant plural mesothelioma by binding to and blocking PS.
The research team were already significantly into second phase trialling of three advanced cancer groups consisting of breast and lung cancer patients. Interim results into tumour response to the antibody had been encouraging - comparing favourably with chemotherapy alone. These results meant that enrolment could begin for the fourth trial which included patients suffering from breast, colorectal, pancreatic, liver, prostate, and head and neck cancer, and those diagnosed with melanoma and the asbestos-related disease, mesothelioma.
Compensation after exposure to asbestos
These sorts of trials take years to yield full and accurate data on the efficacy of new treatments and while medical professionals labour on to find cancer treatments many sufferers of mesothelioma will be likely to lose their battle with this aggressive disease.
