Occasionally some parents are unfortunate enough to experience the death of their baby due to the negligence of a medical professional.
Although no amount of money is ever likely to make complete reparations for such an event, contacting a clinical negligence compensation solicitor could help a family begin to come to terms with their loss.
Midwives and doctors are charged with monitoring a baby's progress in the womb and during labour, but they should also check that newborns are healthy and do not need any further immediate medical attention.
In 2008 a mother who had just given birth collapsed due to an infection. She was given treatment, but staff ignored her concern that her baby could also be suffering from the same virus.
After the mother was told not to worry about her infant, the eight-day-old baby died of a lung infection which, it is claimed, could easily have been treated with antibiotics.
During a later inquest, ten failures by staff at the medical practice were cited by the coroner at the hospital.
In total, 11 midwives had monitored the newborn throughout its eight days of life, and none of them recognised the symptoms which indicated that he was suffering from an infection. They also failed to notify a doctor about the infection until late onset of the illness.
There was also speculation as to whether the midwives had hidden evidence of their failure to identify the early indications of illness in the baby.
Midwives and nurses should be trained to notice a change in a baby's functions, such as a lowered or raised temperature and should know when intervention is required or, if in doubt, when to seek the advice of a doctor.
