However, they accidentally removed the left one before realising their mistake and removing the correct one as well. This left the patient, who was only 17 at the time, permanently infertile.
A major investigation was launched into the medical negligence case and the hospital involved declared that tougher safety measures had since been introduced to ensure a similar incident doesn't happen in the future.
Preparation for such procedures normally includes clear note taking of the particular part which needs removal. When this is on a body part that there is more than one of, such as the testicles, clear marking should be made on the part requiring removal.
Such a simple step such as marking the correct limb before the procedure is not time consuming yet can help prevent against medical errors such as the aforementioned cases of testicle removal.
