It is surprising to learn that primary school teachers are one of the professional groups most prone to suffering a back injury at work.
However, when the facts are looked at it becomes much easier to understand why.
For example, it is estimated that during a 30-year teaching career primary school teachers will spend an average of 20,000 hours using classroom furniture that has been designed entirely for the needs of children.
In addition, there are many other stresses placed on the backs of primary school teachers – heavy lifting of classroom and playground equipment, the use of child-height computers and whiteboards and constant stooping and bending are just some of the many pressures, all of which can take their toll.
In 2011 a survey by education union Voice found that as many as 40% of teachers have been forced to take time off work because of back pain. Despite this, a culture of fear prevents many teachers from reporting their injuries to headteachers – many worry that to do so would be to risk their jobs.
A leading physiotherapist who worked on the survey of 700 teachers says that the needs of staff tend to be overlooked when primacy is placed on the needs of the child. "I don't know who's been planning these classrooms, but no one's thought about this issue properly," she said.
"I've had staff telling me that the sinks have been made adjustable so you can raise them up, but then there is not enough water pressure to get the taps to work.
"Teachers first need to let their headteachers know about their problem because, ultimately, it's the head and governing body who are responsible. But this issue really needs considering properly at a national level."
Sean McDougall, from national charity BackCare (CORR), says that more needs to be done to address the issue of the back injury at work rate among teachers.
"This survey shines a light on an issue that is blighting the lives of thousands of teachers and reducing their ability to offer our children the best possible start in life," he said.
"If this survey is representative of the 20,000 primary schools in the UK, then, potentially, four out of five teachers are suffering from work- related musculoskeletal disorders."
