There is a very good reason why the phrase "Segway accident" does not feature in headlines in UK newspapers like it does in the newspapers of Germany, France, the Netherlands and the US: the Segway Human Transporter, the "carbon free vehicle of the future, is banned in all public places in the UK.
This is because the Department for Transport's interpretation of the Highway Act of 1835 has led it to ban the Segway from all UK pavements, while EU vehicle certification rules mean that the Segway is not allowed to share the roads with cars, buses, motorcycles and bicycles.
Many people have criticized the Department for Transport ruling, which says, "You can only ride an unregistered selfbalancing scooter on land which is private property and with the landowner's permission."
It has also rejected the idea that the Segway should be treated as an electric bicycle on the grounds that "it does not meet requirements because it cannot be pedaled".
However, in 2010 the Department for Transport indicated that it may review its position by announcing a consultation process on the issue of Segway use.
Yet, it seems that any such move would carry risks. In the US, there have already been a number of compensation claims for Segway accidents.
Such accidents typically occur as a result of the vehicle unexpectedly turning itself off or suddenly going into reverse mode, causing riders to be thrown off and sometimes suffering head or spinal injuries.
The risks of this environmentally-friendly mode of transport have been illustrated by a number of accidents involving high-profile users of the "idiot proof" Segway. For example, in 2007 Piers Morgan suffered three broken ribs after he rode his machine into a curb and came crashing to the ground.
Another rider to test the bounds of "idiot proof" was the former US President George Bush Junior who fell of his Segway while testing it out on his family estate.
