It is only natural that the phrase "power station accident" should invoke the kind of harrowing apocalyptic imagery associated with a full-scale safety incident at a nuclear reactor. However, although the risk of a catastrophic incident always remains, the common reality of such accidents is in truth rather more banal.
This does not mean, though, that the risk of these accidents should be ignored. In fact, just as with all UK workers, power station employees are entitled to work in safe, well-managed environments that are protected by the regulations of the Health and Safety at Work Act and all other relevant pieces of legislation.
There are many examples of the kinds of power station accident that are more likely to be a realistic concern to UK power station workers than any doomsday scenario.
2007 Welsh power station accident
In 2007, a power station worker in Wales sustained serious personal injuries which would ultimately lead to him suffering a fatal cardiac arrest after he fell 40ft from a platform at a power station in Glamorgan.
Shortly before the incident, staff had been lobbying for employers to install a full-time medic at the power station.
2009 Nottingham power station accident
In 2009 a construction worker engaged on a project at a Nottingham power station suffered serious injuries after being struck by a falling object.
"Apparently a pipe fell on to a worker, crushing his legs. He was taken to hospital via air ambulance from the site," said the man's Union representative.
2010 power station accident
In January 2010 workers from a coal-fired power station in Kent had to be evacuated following a blaze which broke out in a pump station. Although no one suffered serious injury, the fire highlighted some of the dangers confronting power station workers.
