Protein change claim for mesothelioma

It is true that 100% of people who have developed mesothelioma as a result of workplace asbestos exposure can go on to make a claim for mesothelioma but it is also true that not all people who suffer asbestos exposure will go on to develop this form of cancer.

Why this is so is one of the great mysteries of asbestos cancer research and has long baffled experts around the globe.

However, in 2011 Chinese researchers published an interesting paper Mutation Research that it is hoped will one day help lead to some definitive answers as to why only some asbestos-exposed industrial workers go on to develop the cancer.

Researches closely examined cellular proteins in three types of cells: healthy mesothelial cells, mesothelial cells that had been exposed to crocidolite asbestos in the laboratory and the cells of malignant mesothelioma.

Then, using a multiplex immunoblot-based assay test, researchers were able to examine the "expression levels" of more than 110 different proteins in phosphoproteins in samples obtained from the three different cell types.

Significantly, the researchers noted that asbestos exposure has a considerable effect on protein levels and that, additionally, it has "extensive affects on regulatory networks and pathways".

According to scientists, the fact that protein levels in mesothelial cells are implicated in the development of the mesothelioma could lead to breakthroughs in methods of identifying people who are at risk of mesothelioma and, although it is an optimistic claim for mesothelioma treatment, possibly even a way of controlling the illness in the future.
