Workplace accident risk not top concern for workers

In 2010 an interesting study was carried out into the chief health and safety concerns of the UK workforce. Perhaps surprisingly, given the potential harm caused by a workplace accident, a sudden traumatic occurrence did not top the list of workers' concerns.

According to respondents to the survey, stress was, by some distance, the most pressing health and safety concern in UK workplaces, with a staggering 62% of representatives surveyed rating it among their top five problems.

And it seemed that the there was a substantive link between the pressure of stress and the location of a workplace, with London-based respondents the most likely to rate stress as their chief concern.

However, the position of stress as the predominant worry does not mean that the spectre of the workplace accident has gone away.

In fact, more than 30% of workers rated both slips and trips and work accident back injuries as major concerns, respectively.

Other work injury-related concerns related to repetitive strain injuries (a concern of 28% of workers) and handling heavy loads (a concern of 18% of respondents).

Other worries highlighted by this important survey included psychological issues, such as the pressures of working alone (a concern to 21%) and the burden of being overworked (cited by 29%).

Perhaps most worryingly of all, nearly half of all respondents to the survey, which canvassed the views of workers from a wide range of sectors, including the agriculture, construction and factory industries, said that, as far as they knew, a health and safety inspector had never inspected their place of work.

A spokesperson from no win, no fee injury litigation specialist YouClaim commented, "As well as highlighting the general safety concerns of the UK workforce, this TUC study demonstrated that there is still a vast gulf between the level of inspection required and the situation on the ground."
