2008 saw the publication of research which suggested that children in hospital could be left with delusions and nightmares following their treatment. If this possibility is not recognised by doctors, a clinical negligence solicitor may be able to help a traumatised child's parents make a compensation claim.
The researchers examined 100 children aged between 7 and 17 who had received treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital, and found that most could remember details of their time in intensive care, although this was often vague. However, almost a third of these had delusional memories, and this group were far more likely to suffer post-traumatic stress disorders.
It remains unclear whether the delusional memories are related to the illness or the medication used to treat it.
The research leader said that "The hallucinations children reported were overwhelmingly disturbing and frightening, similar to those reported by adult intensive care patients and heroin addicts going through withdrawal."
A consultant doctor confirmed this, and stated "We now say to parents the hallucinations are a possibility and [the children] could have problems after they leave the unit and, if they do, please let us know and we can get them help.
"We bring in the psychologist very quickly now."
As one of the tests for a medical negligence claim is failing to act in the manner that other doctors would in a similar situation, failing to bring a psychologist in to treat suspected delusions may make the case eligible for compensation.
