Charity presses for workplace accidents to be investigated fully

The Centre for Corporate Accountability (CCA) is a UK charity concerned with the promotion of public safety and safety in the workplace. It focuses on the role of state bodies, the enforcement of health and safety laws, the investigation of workplace accidents, deaths and injuries, and subjects them to full and correct prosecution scrutiny.

Set up in 1999 as a non-profit making organisation, the CCA received UK charitable status in August 2004.

Key roles of the CCA:

  • the CCA is a national organisation providing free, independent and confidential advice to the families of anyone killed or injured in a work related accident
  • campaigning for changes in law and policy. For example, the CCA has worked on the corporate manslaughter reform process
  • undertaking of research into law enforcement and corporate accountability evaluating the effectiveness of state bodies in enforcing health and safety law, and the role of Coroners and criminal justice system
  • the only non-governmental organisation monitoring work-place deaths in England and Wales
  • organisation of conferences and the publication of a quarterly newsletter which provides information on safety and law enforcement issues
  • conferencing that brings together Government ministers, employer organisations, trade unions, academics, bereaved families and lawyers.

The CCA provides invaluable advice when a workplace accident results in a fatality, and an investigation and prosecution ensures.

  • The organisation can help the family when they have to deal with police, the health and safety executive, local authorities and any agency that may become involved.
  • They are able to find out information for the family and write letters to different state bodies. They are able to provide representatives to attend meetings along with the family.
  • The CCA endeavours to help the family understand the process and to ascertain whether the investigation has been carried out adequately.
