Work-related accidents and Homer the safety RoSPA safety rep

In 2009 the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents announced that it would use the most popular television show of all time, The Simpsons™, to promote the kinds of safety practices that are designed to prevent work-related accidents.

Fronting the campaign is perhaps the most unlikely occupational safety pin-up in history: Homer Simpson; for although Homer is employed as the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant's Safety Inspector, he may actually be the most accident-prone fictional worker in the history of television.

But, as Homer himself has been known to say, "Do as I say, not as I do": a message, it seems, that is behind all of the campaign's posters.

Tom Mullarkey, RoSPA's chief executive, comments, "Homer's approach to safety reminds us all of something about ourselves – that cutting corners can affect other people's lives as well as our own. Although Homer will never win a RoSPA Safety Award, he is there to get us talking about safety and through his constant mishaps, offer some tongue in cheek insights.

"Any similarity with British workers (or indeed British dads) is purely coincidental!" he jokingly adds.

However, some commentators have sought to criticise the campaign, saying that it "trivialises" serious issues and, by featuring images of cartoon commentators caught in melodramatic situations actually diminishes our understanding of the real-world consequences of even the most simple work-related accident: the slip and trip.

Joel Cohen, writer and producer of the The Simpsons™, says that he is pleased with the appropriation of the show's characters to deliver a workplace safety message. "I am happy that The Simpsons™ has found new value in such an important area as work safety. As a writer it's all about the paper cuts, but we all need to be safe," he said.
