Therapy for carpal tunnel syndrome

There are all sorts of work-related injuries which can occur, and one which affects office workers, typists and anyone who spends their day using a computer keyboard is carpal tunnel syndrome.

Akin to RSI (repetitive strain injury), carpal tunnel syndrome happens when an internal area of the wrist is damaged. This damage may occur for a number of reasons, but the action of typing, resting wrists on a desk or laptop edge, or even a wrist-rest, can cause inflammation inside the wrist leading to numbness and tingling in the hands and arm.

The carpal tunnel is a small tube which runs inside the wrist to the lower palm. Several tendons and the median nerve are housed in this channel, and they work to control feeling and movement in the hand.

If tissues surrounding the tendons become damaged or inflamed the space inside the carpal tunnel becomes decreased and pressure may be enacted upon the median nerve.

This pressure leads to motor and sensory disturbance, which can range from mild to severe, and the sufferer may experience any or all of the following:

  • pain

  • discomfort

  • tingling

  • pins and needles

  • sensation of heat

  • numbness

  • loss of motor function in the fingers

These symptoms can be experienced very locally in the hands or they may spread to the whole arm and even into the shoulder.

Therapy for carpal tunnel syndrome
Usually treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome involves non-invasive procedures such as wrist exercises, the wearing of wrist splints, and the administering of corticosteroid injections.

There are, however, certain products on the market such as therapy gloves which use infrared technology and electrotherapy kits, but their efficacy is largely unproven and they are often very costly.

In the severest of cases a patient may be advised to undergo surgery which will aim to reduce pressure on the median nerve, but this is often seen only as a last resort.
