Some drivers show no respect for others on the road, but considerate motorists may also become dangerous drivers if they are in a bad mood and might cause another road user to claim traffic collision compensation.
In a survey by a leading insurance company in 2010, 43% of the 3,000 people questioned, admitted to driving too fast when they were angry.
Research undertaken by gocompare.com that same year, found that BMW drivers were the angriest motorists in the UK. Apparently, they were more likely to use obscene hand gestures, tailgate other road users and break speed limits, than any other vehicle owner.
At the time, the chief operating officer at gocompare.com said, "There really is no excuse for bad behaviour and loss of tempers on the road, and we would recommend anyone who is feeling angry or emotional to think twice before getting in the car. It only takes one wrong decision or thoughtless manoeuvres to cause a really serious accident."
Considerate driving
The Highway Code states that drivers must not:
To further reiterate the importance of this road safety rule, the code states a little later that motorists should "Be considerate. Be careful of and considerate towards all types of road users, especially those requiring extra care".
Despite this clear warning however, an average of seven people a day join the fatality statistics on the roads of Britain, and the death toll from 1999 to 2009 – just 10 years – was more than 32,298. The BBC reported in 2009 that road traffic accidents were "the largest single cause of accidental death for people aged between five and 35 years".
