Road accidents, youclaim.co.uk

Making an accident claim online after a car crash with a tractor

Despite the relatively low numbers of people working in agriculture in the UK, it is an industry category with one of the highest casualty rates. It is not only farm workers themselves who are hurt but members of the public injured as a result of a farmer's activities could also be eligible to make an accident claim online.

Modern tractors are large, sophisticated pieces of machinery capable of reasonable speeds when travelling along a road, but to be involved in a car crash with one could leave a vehicle driver, and passengers, with the same type of serious injuries they would have suffered if they had collided with a lorry.

Another aspect of driving which is similar for both tractors and HGVs is the difficulty of the driver, who is high in their cab, being able to see a small car, motorbike or bicycle low on the road behind or to one side of them in their 'blind spot'.

Experienced tractor drivers will realise that this is a potential danger and take suitable precautions before emerging into traffic, making right turns, or undertaking similar manoeuvres which might be hazardous to other road users.

Tractors often pull implements or trailers behind them when on their way between farm buildings and fields, or for transporting livestock, and these, too, could cause a danger to other drivers by increasing visibility problems.

Trailers which have been inadequately maintained, or have not been correctly attached to the towing tractor, could become unhitched and create an unexpected obstacle in the road or collide with a following car.

During the summer and autumn, rural drivers are usually alert to the many heavily-loaded trailers of hay, grain and other crops which have been harvested and are being taken from the fields for storage. However, strangers to an area may not be prepared for the sight of a bulky vehicle taking up two-thirds of the width of a country lane coming towards them.

As with other drivers of goods vehicles, tractor drivers, and those responsible for loading trailers, need to be aware of the possibility of their cargo being insecure and falling into the road or destabilising the transport unit, potentially causing it to overturn.

Weights and sizes are specified for most goods vehicles with a maximum of 44 tonnes and a length of 18.75m for a vehicle and trailer. Although there is no legal height restriction of loads, they must be able to pass under bridges.

The limits are specified not only to reduce damage to minor roads and prevent noise and pollution in residential areas, but also in the interests of safety for pedestrians and other drivers who may be at greater risk of suffering a traffic accident if heavy vehicles are using unsuitable roads.

Drivers of tractors and other farm vehicles must obey these regulations the same as any other driver. Vehicles suspected of being overloaded can be stopped by police or Department of the Environment officials and ordered to go to a weighbridge for checking then may be fined if found to be in breach of the law.
