If you have witnessed a road traffic incident it is likely that you will be able to assist greatly in any ensuing car accident compensation claim or police investigation. It is therefore vital that you remain calm and try to be effective.
Help is at hand
Even if you are shaken by witnessing the car accident, you may be able to save lives.
Firstly, stay calm. Do not risk causing further accidents by running across the road.
Put on your hazard warning lights to warn other road users.
If there are injuries you should call 999 as soon as possible. Try to give as much information regarding injured persons to the operator as possible. Remember that an injured person who is quiet may well be in a more serious condition than the person who is screaming.
You will be asked to identify the location of the accident, so think calmly about road numbers and town names, etc.
Stay at the scene of the accident until the emergency services arrive.
Providing emergency service
At a car accident, all vehicles involved are required by law to stop and exchange details, so, if you see a car leaving the scene, try to note down the vehicle's details, particularly the registration number.
Do not attempt to move an injured person before medical help arrives, but remember you can be invaluable in making someone comfortable and by reassuring them that help is on its way.
Try to find coats and blankets to put over anyone who may be in shock.
If you know first aid, give it to those who need it. If the person is losing a lot of blood, try to stem bleeding by applying force to the wound.
Scene of crime
It is illegal to move any vehicle or debris at the accident scene. Leave this for the emergency services even if the road is blocked to other road users.
Do not smoke, there may be petrol spillages.
Taking account
If you are likely to be needed as an impartial witness, try to write down what you saw of the accident as soon as possible.
Keep any original notes, photos or sketches that you make.
It is not a legal requirement to give a witness account, but the police can ask you to give a witness statement instead.
If you have to make a car accident compensation claim
A witness can be invaluable if you are involved in a road traffic accident that was not your fault. No matter how minor the damage, if there are people around, ask them if they saw what happened and if you can take down their details.
