Preventing fatal car accidents for 50 years - the three-pointer seatbelt

The humble three-point seatbelt is perhaps not so humble when you consider that it has saved more than a million lives worldwide: more than a million reasons for us to celebrate its 50th birthday. Quite simply, without the three-point seatbelt, there would be an extra 500 fatal car accidents in the UK each year. And who do we have to thank to thank for this wonder of road safety invention? The answer: Volvo.

In 1959 Nils Bohllin - co-inventor of the aviation catapult ejector seat - developed the three-pointer during landmark road safety work with the manufacturer. Volvo immediately recognised the value of the technology and by 1963 had it fitted as standard in all its vehicles.

However, not content with revolutionising the future of seatbelt safety, in an act of selfless philanthropy, Volvo decided to democratise the technology by making it available to all other manufacturers.

Naturally proud of their achievement, Volvo did not shy away from celebrating the landmark half-century. A spokesperson commented, "Although we may now take it for granted, modern technological developments, such as seat belt pre-tensioners, are designed to work in conjunction with the same basic design of the seatbelt, so it remains the single most important safety feature on all modern cars.

"Now required by law in modern cars, it continues to protect hundreds of thousands of people from death or serious injury in car accidents every year."

Prince Michael, Prince Royal Patron of the Commission for Global Road Safety, added, "I congratulate Volvo on its outstanding achievement. Its leadership and commitment will make a significant contribution to our aim of saving five million more lives across the world over the next ten years."

Despite its obvious advantages in protecting motorists from car accident injuries, the three-pointer has not been without its controversies. For example, Ford once had to pay a multi-million dollar personal injury settlement to people who had made no win, no fee claims for "seatbelt syndrome".
