Although no incident of irresponsible driving should ever be tolerated, when reckless and careless driving puts the lives and safety of children at risk it will always seem particularly shocking. In fact, a 2009 survey carried out by road charity Brake helps shed light on the worrying extent to which adults subject children to unnecessary risk of car accident injury.
The study, commissioned for Road Safety Week, asked 621 children from the South West of England, all aged nine to 11, a series of questions relating to their individual road safety experience.
Terrifyingly, 73% said that they had at least once been in an overcrowded car, with many admitting that they had been forced to "squish in" without a seatbelt.
50% revealed that they are frightened all or some of the time by the speed at which they are regularly driven. In comparison, only 37% said they felt they were always driven safely.
The study suggested that child seatbelts should be an issue of national concern; 99% of children said they were responsible for belting up themselves, and only 39% said their parents checked to ensure they do so.
71% confessed they had unfastened their seatbelt while the car was moving, and 39% said they believed that their parents were unconcerned when they did so.
