Spinal injuries can vary from those that result in mild discomfort, to those that create chronic and persistent pain, to those of the most severe nature, which result in paralysis.
Every year, hundreds of people in the UK suffer paralysis after enduring traumatic incidents such as falls from height, car crashes or sporting accidents.
As things stand, these paralysis injuries are almost always permanent and precipitate profound life-changes for sufferers and, where appropriate, will also result in civil compensation claims to ensure sums for loss of capacity, loss of enjoyment, medical care and loss of earnings.
However, in 2010 geneticists announced that they had succeeded in creating a drug that they claim has the potential to "shut down" the process of paralysis, therefore, providing intervention is administered soon after spinal trauma, preventing paralysis from ever occurring. "My hope is eventually you could get it [the drug] into the ambulance," said the lead researcher from the University of Maryland team behind the study.
All this focuses on a gene, Abcc8, which, in the event of spinal trauma, activates the Sulfonylurea receptor-1 (Sur1) protein. Although this process is part of the body's natural defence against serious spinal injury, paradoxically it actually plays a major part in causing paralyzing spinal injuries.
By shutting it down, though so far this has only been done in mice, scientists have been able to preserve healthy neurological function and avert the kind of spinal injuries that causes paralysis.
"By shutting down the Abcc8 gene that encodes the Sur1 protein the researchers were able to halt the self-destructive process and improve long-term recovery in spinal cord injured mice," says one summary of the report.
