Sideswiping lorries and car accident claims

One of the car accident perils feared by motorway drivers is the blind spot of large vehicles. This can lead to 'sideswipe' incidents, where a lorry pulls across lanes with no awareness of a car travelling in the lane it crosses into.

This type of road traffic accident can be particularly severe, both in terms of damage to the car and of personal injury, simply because the larger vehicle may not be aware of the impending collision until it is too late to take evasive manoeuvres.

Foreign vehicles designed for driving on the "wrong" side of the road may be more than usually prone to this kind of incident. More than 400 such accidents were recorded in 2006 alone. The government began to issue free lenses to incoming lorries in 2009, known as "Fresnel" lenses, which can be affixed to the screens of left-hand-drive vehicles and 'bend' incoming light to improve the field of vision, thus reducing accidents and, therefore, accident injury.

This type of intervention cannot entirely prevent blind spots and resulting collisions, of course. Simply from the fact that the drivers and their mirrors are relatively high off the ground, it is clear that a small car that is immediately next to the cab may not be visible either through the windscreen or through the mirrors. The advice that is printed on several lorries now, that "if you can't see my mirrors, I can't see you," is therefore accurate, and applies to motorists as much as pedestrians.

Driving experts also recommend avoiding a car crash by, when overtaking a lorry, ensuring that there is 'escape room' - ideally space ahead of the lorry to move into, but potentially including a third lane - before undertaking the manoeuvre.
