One of the car accident perils feared by motorway drivers is the blind spot of large vehicles. This can lead to 'sideswipe' incidents, where a lorry pulls across lanes with no awareness of a car travelling in the lane it crosses into.

The advice that is printed on several lorries now, that "if you can't see my mirrors, I can't see you," is therefore accurate, and applies to motorists as much as pedestrians.
Driving experts also recommend avoiding a car crash by, when overtaking a lorry, ensuring that there is 'escape room' - ideally space ahead of the lorry to move into, but potentially including a third lane - before undertaking the manoeuvre.
